Selections from the history of Al-Jabarti

Abdul Rahman Al-Jabarti is considered one of the most prominent historians in the history of Egypt. He was born in Cairo in 1756 AD and died there in 1825 AD. His family came from the village of Jabarti near the port of Zeila on the Red Sea, and his seventh grandfather immigrated to Egypt to become sheikh of the Jabartiyya Gallery in Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, and his father, Hassan al-Din Burhan, was his teacher. The first in various sciences.
Al-Jabarti lived during the period of the dissolution of the Ottoman regime and the Mamluk rebellions, and chronicled the advent of the French campaign against Egypt led by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1798 and the accession of Muhammad Ali Pasha to power. He witnessed eras of injustice and persecution from the Mamluks, Ottomans, and French leaders, and defended human rights, which put him in a confrontation with Muhammad Ali Pasha, who used the principle of hard labor to force Egyptians to work on his projects.
Al-Jabarti is famous for his historical books, the most important of which are "The Wonders of Antiquities in Biographies and News" and "The Appearance of Sanctification with the Demise of the Franciscan State," which chronicle the most critical periods of Egyptian history. Western historians described him as the "Herodotus of Egypt" for his accuracy in documenting events, and the British Arnold Toynbee considered him like the Greek Thucydides.
This book presents selections from the history of Al-Jabarti, known as "The Wonders of Antiquities in Biographies and News," and it contains an account of the social and political life of Egyptians, and conveys an accurate picture of the effects of the French campaign and the period of Muhammad Ali's rule, which makes it an important and unique document in the modern history of Egypt.
