People familiar with the two languages generally have the impression that Basque and English could not be more different. While this may certainly be true in terms of their more superficial features, they are more similar than one might at first suspect in their internal structure. This book explores this apparent dichotomy.

Portrait

Beatriz Fernández Fernández is a full professor in the Department of Linguistics and Basque Studies at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). She received her PhD in 1997 from the same institution and is a corresponding member of the Euskaltzaindia, the official authority on the usages, vocabulary, and grammar of the Basque language. Her research has centered around morphosyntactic variation in Basque, and she has published a variety of articles in international journals such as Natural Language and Linguistic Theory, Syntax, Linguistic Typology and Folia Linguistica among others. She has also published books on the topic as well as edited compilation volumes for Oxford University Press, John Benjamins, and Brill, among other publishers. The present volume is the English translation of her first book on science intended for the general public. She has one child and currently lives in the Basque Country on the Bay of Biscay.
