»Continuity of Constitution. Statements of Continuity and Discontinuity in the German constitutions between the Old Reich and 1849«: Looking at German constitutions between the end of the Old Reich and the democratic revolution in 1849, the author examines so-called "continuity expressions" by certain categories, formed according to how explicitly continuity is expressed, with respect to preceding constitutions. In doing so, he concludes that the constitutions at hand rarely ever express explicit discontinuity, but transport continuity foremost on a more implicit and >topological< level to carry past legitimacy to a new era.

Christoph Smets studierte Rechtswissenschaften an den Universitäten Mannheim, Bristol und Bonn. Dort absolvierte er den Schwerpunkt »Staat und Verfassung im Prozess der Internationalisierung«. In Mannheim war er Wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft, nach der ersten Prüfung (2011) arbeitete er an den Universitäten Hagen und Düsseldorf als Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter. Nach dem Referendariat mit Stationen an der Universität Speyer und einer Euregio absolvierte er beim OLG Düsseldorf 2019 die zweite juristische Staatsprüfung. Seit 2020 arbeitet er als Justitiar an der Universität Bonn.
