Hywel Dda, who ruled most of Wales in the 10th century, codified a system of laws which was in use for over 500 years. This clear English translation by an eminent lawyer and expert in Welsh legal history includes an introduction and fascinating explanatory notes by the author. Out of print for many years, this is the first paperback edition.
A Londoner by birth, Dafydd Jenkins (1911-2012) lived in Ceredigion from 1938 onwards. He read Natural Sciences and Law at Cambridge University, England, and then became a barrister on the South Wales Circuit. He was Organising Secretary for the Welsh Language Petition in 1938, and joined the staff of the Law Department at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1965. He held a personal chair in Legal History and Welsh Law from 1975 until his retirement. As an experienced professional lawyer, his contribution to the study of Welsh Medieval Law was especially valuable. He also wrote in Welsh on a variety of literary and other subjects. He was awarded the Prose Medal at the 1948 National Eisteddfod.
