The Well-Dressed Neanderthal

We arrived on Earth 30,000 years ago. The Neanderthals were the dominant species then, but the Empty Ones liquidated them. Over millennia, the memory of that genocide faded, and truth became myth as we descended into barbarism.
Yet some of us didn't forget. And we have battled the Empty Ones for thousands of years. They were nearly defeated, then an archaeological dig team found a technologically advanced instrument on the pre-historic remains of a Neanderthal man. The archaeologists were baffled. But we knew exactly what it was. And so did the Empty Ones.
So, we sent the ill-prepared Judit Falleg and her team to recover the artifact before the Empty Ones could. Now, she must succeed on her first mission if humanity is to escape the fate of our Neanderthal brothers. She'll need help. And when she and FBI Agent Ian Magee unexpectedly cross paths, she thinks he might be the ally she needs.
But Ian is an alcoholic with troubles of his own. With the help of his partner at the FBI, his bar-owning AA sponsor, and an ethereal little girl, he's been sober for three years. Barely. Now, a friend is missing, his boss wants to fire him, and the nightmares come frequently.
