Karen was worried and hopeful as she waited, shivering on the freezing station platform, for Josh's train to arrive from Chicago. It was midnight in midwinter in mid-Nebraska – much different from last summer when they had fallen hopelessly in love and spent many afternoons "picnicking" in the woods. They hadn't hadn't seen each other for months, and now they had only 90 minutes of tryst time before his train back home was to arrive on its way east. They planned on figuring out where and how to have a rapid assignation somewhere nearby, in their short time together, thereby recapturing their rapturous summer romance. Trains can be late though, and time was growing shorter between Josh's arrival and his departure.

Gene Clements is an artist, architect, and educator. He began the Tilly and Elmer series by writing a couple of paragraphs about a frisky older couple. His friends thought they were funny and wanted to find out what was going to happen if he finished the story. Now they know, for better or worse.
Gene grew up in a small town in the Midwest although he now lives in California. He thinks he's eighteen, but he's really the same age as Tilly and Elmer. These stories aren't necessarily autobiographical. Gene knows a lot of interesting people and has a prolific imagination; a dangerous combination.
