Peter Gemeinhardt's textbook covering the first six centuries of Christianity deals with its role as a religion during this time, its practices of piety, the formation of doctrine through theology, and the church as an organised institution. The central focus is on the tension created by the high levels of inner-Christian plurality and the search for identity in the competitive coexistence between monotheistic as well as polytheistic cults and schools of philosophy.
