Wangjie Chen studierte von 2009 bis 2013 Rechtswissenschaft an der Tongji Universität in Shanghai, wo er 2012 das juristische Staatsexamen der Volksrepublik China ablegte. Anschließend begann er dort weiter das Masterstudium in Jura, das er 2016 abschloss. Gefördert durch ein DAAD-Stipendium absolvierte er von 2014 bis 2016 das LL.M.-Studium an der Juristischen Fakultät der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Die Promotion erfolgte im Jahr 2022 bei Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wagner an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Während seines Promotionsstudiums wurde er von der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung gefördert.
