Abdulrazak Gurnah wurde in Sansibar, Tansania geboren und lebt heute in Großbritannien. Er war Professor für englische und postkoloniale Literaturen an der University of Kent in Canterbury. Seine Werke drehen sich oft um Migration, das „Weggehen und Ankommen, aber vielmehr im Vordergrund stehen die Begegnungen der Kulturen, also er betont in seinen Büchern weniger das Trennende als das Verbindende“.
